5 Visual Mistakes on Your Website Scaring Away Customers
Your website's visual appearance is the first impression a visitor gets of your brand. An ill-conceived, amateur design immediately breeds mistrust. We've collected the 5 most common visual mistakes that make your potential customers choose the competition instead.
1. Poor Quality, Irrelevant Images
Blurry, pixelated, or generic stock photos send the message that you don't take your own business seriously. Use sharp, high-resolution photos taken by yourself or a professional photographer that authentically showcase your product, service, or team.
2. Unreadable Text
Too small font size, poor contrast (e.g., light gray text on a white background), or an overly decorative, unreadable font is the surest way to ensure the visitor doesn't read a word on your site. Body text should be at least 16px in size, and the contrast ratio should meet WCAG recommendations.
3. Clutter and Lack of White Space
"White space" (or negative space) is one of the most important elements of design. This is the airy, empty area left around text, images, and buttons. If everything is crowded, the page is hard to scan and feels oppressive. Dare to leave space between elements so they can "breathe"!
4. Inconsistent Branding
If your site has ten different colors and five different fonts, it creates a chaotic and amateur impression. Define a narrow color palette (2-3 main colors) and a font pair (one for headings, one for text), and use them consistently everywhere. This strengthens brand recognition.
5. Unclear Visual Hierarchy
The visitor must clearly see what the most important element on a page is. The main headline should be the largest, buttons should stand out from their surroundings, and important information should be easily noticeable. Use size, color, and placement to guide the user's eye!
Good design is not self-serving. Its goal is to help the user achieve their goal, whether it's gathering information or making a purchase.
